Elias Law Group Intervenes to Protect Voters in Eight DOJ Voter Data Lawsuits

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elias Law Group has filed motions to intervene on behalf of voters and several organizations in all eight federal lawsuits brought by the Department of Justice against California, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.

In the lawsuits, which were filed last month, the DOJ seeks to compel those states to hand over full, unredacted voter registration files containing the sensitive personal information of millions of voters. The request is unprecedented and directly threatens not only the sovereign rights of the states that the DOJ has sued, but also the privacy rights of voters in those states. Voters are rightfully deeply concerned about this severe and unlawful federal overreach, and Elias Law Group is proud to represent the proposed intervenors as they seek to be heard in each of these cases.

"The Department of Justice's dangerous campaign to seize private voter information from states across the country is an unacceptable overreach that threatens both voter privacy and election integrity," said Elisabeth Frost, Litigation Chair at Elias Law Group. "States already provide all that they must in compliance with federal law. The DOJ’s demands go far beyond legal requirements and raise serious questions about voter intimidation, voter suppression, and misuse of private data for partisan purposes. We are intervening in every single one of these cases to protect the rights of voters and defend the states' authority to administer their own elections and safeguard their residents' sensitive personal information."

State election officials from both parties have resisted the DOJ's demands, citing concerns about voter privacy, data security, and a lack of transparency about how the federal government intends to use the information.

Elias Law Group is now litigating more than 60 voting and election cases in 30 states.
